24th January 2025

Today has been a quieter day than our previous two.

About 1030 we were summoned to the top deck to see a point of  interest, the island of Muolkkut.
Translated as the island of milk when it was a dairy farm.

We’re not sure if the photo above is sunrise, sunset or both, but we noted one of many LNG carriers in the area.

Used be a large farming area but now is a large LNG  (liquified natural gas) plant, drawing from  a seabed pipeline some 20kms away.
Weird to see when so close to the cookie cutter like homes of Hammerfest right next door.

Whilst on the 7th floor we were also treated with some Energy Coffee.
To be honest it tasted like it would be fabulous for marinating a chicken breast or two.

There are a few excursions out and about today but Stuart and I will join the expedition team to make the very short walk to Meridianstøtten which is essentially the start of the survey of the Struve Geodetic Arc.

This survey occurred between 1846 and 1847 from  Hammerfest to the Black Sea and was the first accurate measurement of a Meriden arc.
Fascinating.

Not much else happens around these wharves but we did find a butcher…..
A Tomahawk steak cost NOK 600 kg and similarly for the lamb rack, about NOK 580 kg.
Approx $80 kg.

On board again for my daily soup fix for lunch. I was feeling quite good about only having soups for lunch but slowly realising there deliciousness is probably due the abundant amounts of cream used in preparation.

Again, another lovely quiet afternoon reading.
Dark by about 3pm, so still a bit confusing.

We did go to a presentation about the history of Hurtigruten which was really interesting.
It seems these ships and smart chaps behind them created this pathway that opened up and serviced the isolated North of Norway.

Whilst we’re upstairs in the lounge after dinner, the universe is at it again…
